Cornellians come together to remember President Garrett

The Cornell community observes a moment of silence for President Elizabeth Garrett March 7 on the Arts Quad.

The Cornell community gathered solemnly across campus in the late afternoon March 7 to pay their respects to Cornell’s 13th president, Elizabeth Garrett, who died the previous day of colon cancer.

More than a thousand university leaders, students, faculty, staff and local community members met on the Arts Quad, the same ground that fewer than six months earlier saw the celebration of Garrett’s inauguration.

Skorton's town hall addresses university finances

To clarify the "seemingly contradictory realities" inherent in Cornell University’s budget, President David Skorton held a town hall meeting March 16 to discuss the university’s slim operating margin with faculty, students and staff.

“Today is an attempt to move forward with broader transparency,” said Skorton. “The goal of this conversation … is to engage the campus community in a discussion of values and priorities to make critical choices.”

Students team with Cornell Dining to fight food insecurity

Every Thursday night at around 8 p.m., several students trek to Becker House and the Robert Purcell Marketplace Eatery to take small amounts of food from the kitchen warming ovens, cool them rapidly and load them up for the Friendship Donations Network to distribute to food pantries across the county.

Growth and well-being focus of Staff Development Day

Opportunities abound on campus and, on July 23, employees were given a glimpse of what Cornell has to offer at the 16th annual Staff Development Day (previously known as Staff Education Exploration Day). More than 400 employees attended this year’s event at the Biotechnology Building, gathering information on professional development, wellness and furthering education.

Wellness Program's McKinney receives Opperman Award

Beth McKinney, director of the Cornell University Wellness Program and a former employee-elected trustee, received the Opperman Award for Staff Advocacy at the second annual Kudos luncheon May 7, sponsored by the Employee Assembly (EA).

EA Chair Brigitt Schaffner surprised McKinney with the award after recognizing staff members who were the recipients of kudos submitted to the EA website this past year. Kudos recipients and those who submitted them were invited to the luncheon at Taverna Banfi; more than 50 people attended.

About 2,400 members of the Cornell community attended Employee Celebration.

About 2,400 faculty, staff, retirees and their families took advantage of a brief break in recent cold weather to cheer on Cornell athletes and attend the winter Employee Celebration dinner in the Ramin Room at Bartels Hall, Jan. 25.

In his mid-90s and possibly the oldest volunteer in the event’s history, Carleton Potter ’40 joined senior administrators, students and staff members in serving chicken parmesan and pasta dinners to participants.
